How alcoholism affects the liver.
Alcoholism may be explained as continued excessive and compulsive use of alcohol drinks leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction.
Alcoholism is associated with a lot of health problems such as diabetes, liver cancer, throat cancer, oesophagal cancer, breast cancer, mouth cancer, weight gain (obesity), kidney problems and fertility problems,
Let's see how is the liver affected.
First of all, liver receives all the molecules that the gut absorb from food including glucose, amino acids, drugs and poisons.
Alcohol as a drug affects normal working of the body. Alcohol is addictive and may cause great harm when used in excess.
Alcohol passes quickly to the liver after being absorbed from the gut. Liver cells convert alcohol into another substance which does not pass through the rest of the body's circulation.
Alcohol (ethanol) is converted into acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) which is highly toxic and carcinogen (cancer causing).
Liver cells also work to convert Acetaldehyde into acetate which is finally converted and excreted as Water and Carbon dioxide.
Unfortunately, upon working to protect other tissues, the liver is likely to harm itself. The liver works harder to detoxify acetaldehyde. Liver cells are damaged in high concentration of acetaldehyde, leading to cirrhosis of the liver. Finally the liver fails and acetaldehyde pass to other tissues causing cancers in different organs such as oesophagal cancer, breast cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer and many others. Some other related problems of alcoholism is fertility problems, obesity, diabetes and poverty.
